OUYA Create Jam Entry

So OUYA Create jam is over and we submitted an entry!

We had to completely re do what I had been working on due to the rules of the competition but the learnings from before the competition came in handy.

Here is the trailer for the game:

It all worked out pretty well. A couple of things could of gone better. For one, Nick never finished the main characters model so I just had to make a new texture for a Minecraft model I had made as part of a tutorial, I think he looks more like a mini hulk than a zombie.

I didn't have time to make enemies, a bit of a shame because the game feels a little empty without them. This will be the first thing I work on now. (If I decide to continue work on this game, not sure yet, need a while to think about it)

Lots of lessons learnt in this, I think from now on I will model first then code the gameplay around the model instead of the other way round. It's a bit of work getting your code to work again when you get a different shape model.

Overall I am happy with what we have achieved here, my first real game and a lot of new tools learnt within the Unity framework. I will put them to good use :)

Here's the details I have posted with the game:

Game Background
Zeb's Tale is a game about a zombie child named Zeb,he is the only child zombie in the world, all other children who have been infected haven't survived. With being the only child zombie Zeb has the ability to run and jump, an ability the older zombies don't have. Due to this the elder zombies have decided to send Zeb on a quest, a quest to find the cure to the infection and save all zombie kind!

Gameplay
3D platform influenced by Nintendo 64 classics Banjo Kazooie, Zelda and Mario 64. This game will have open levels and puzzles to solve which will reward you with items that help you progress past levels and unlock new ones. You will be able to run, jump. smash, slam and move objects to reach the end of the game.

Included In The Prototype
A sample level that includes 3 keys to collect and 100 coins (optional to finsh). The aim is to open the door in the middle of the level and pass through.

Things We Wanted To Include (But ran out of time to do)
The main character model was being worked on but we ran out of time to finish it.
Enemies, we have attack buttons all set up but no one to fight! It's all right though, you can use those attacks to good use somewhere in the level

Controls
Left Stick - Walk/Run
D Pad - Change camera distance/height
L Button/R Button (Held down) - Move camera behind Zeb
O - Jump/Double Jump
U (while in air) - Smash Attack
U - Action button (Pickup/drop object, Talk/give)
Y - Throw brains
A - Attack (punch, triple punch, run attack, jump attack)

About the Developers
I am a long time gamer, long time developer but first time game developer. Have always toyed with the idea of developing a game but never really came of anything. When my brother Nick backed the OUYA in the KickStarter we decided to give making a game a go. I started learning Unity but never really got far until this jam was announced, then things got serious. With a new game idea I started coding and Nick started modelling, we have learnt a lot (mainly that there is a lot of work in game development) but it's been worth it, I'm very proud of our first effort, and hope to build on this in the future.

CREATE OUYA Jam

I have decided I am going to enter a game into the Create OUYA Jam.(http://killscreendaily.com/create/) Basically it means I need to create a playable prototype of my game that will run on the OUYA in 2 weeks, no small task.

So I have ramped up development and it means I will need to purchase the Android package for Unity before I wanted to, but it is a great opportunity to get some publicity for my game at such an early stage in development. My goal is to make it into the finalists list, that would get massive publicity aimed at OUYA future owners and also win myself a dev console. Even if it doesn't win a prize it will be a great opportunity to start a Kickstarter champaign.

My brother has finally jumped on-board,  he initially was going to help me with the game but hasn't really got into it. I think this competition has given him some new inspiration and there is no way I would be able to enter anything decent without his help. He is working on some models while I am continuing game play and building a level that will include some puzzles. All is actually moving along smoothly, and I think we will have it all working within time.

I won't be posting any of the new mechanics here until I have the prototype level all working and ready to enter the completion. Wish me luck :)
